What Is the Etsy Transaction Fee?

The Etsy transaction fee is a percentage Etsy takes from each sale as payment for hosting your shop, providing buyer traffic, and processing the transaction. In 2026 the rate is 6.5% — unchanged from when Etsy raised it from 5% in April 2022.

The fee is calculated on the total amount the buyer pays for the item plus any shipping fee you charge. Gift wrapping fees you charge are also included. Sales tax collected by Etsy is not included in the transaction fee base.

Formula

Transaction Fee = (Item Price + Shipping Charged) × 6.5%

Example: You sell a handmade candle for $28 and charge $6 shipping. The transaction fee is ($28 + $6) × 6.5% = $2.21.

How Is the Transaction Fee Collected?

Deducted from seller balance

Etsy does not withhold the transaction fee at the moment of sale. Instead, the fee is added as a charge on your seller account. Etsy deducts it when you initiate a deposit or when your balance is auto-deposited at the end of the month.

Common Questions About the Etsy Transaction Fee

Does the transaction fee apply to shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% fee applies to the item price plus any shipping amount you charge the buyer. If you offer free shipping, Etsy calculates the fee on the item price only.

Is the transaction fee charged on sales tax?

No. Etsy collects and remits sales tax on behalf of sellers in most US states. That tax amount is excluded from the transaction fee base.

What if a buyer requests a refund?

If you refund a buyer in full, Etsy credits the transaction fee back to your account. Partial refunds result in a proportional credit.

Can I pass the transaction fee to buyers?

Many sellers build fees into their item price rather than charging separately. A common approach: divide your desired net by 0.87 to cover the ~13% total fee rate.

Is 6.5% high compared to other platforms?

eBay charges 12.9–15% in final value fees. Amazon takes 8–15%. Poshmark charges a flat 20% (items under $15) or $2.95 flat. At 6.5%, Etsy's transaction fee is competitive for a marketplace with built-in buyer traffic.
